The Mission of AVID
The mission of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

Course Description
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a year-long elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success. Each week, students receive instruction that uses a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor‐led study groups, motivational activities, and academic survival skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that use strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to support their academic growth.

The sixth grade AVID Elective course is an introduction to the AVID philosophy. Students will develop awareness of the values accompanying academic goals and success. The course will focus on building self-confidence and communication skills in working with peers and adults. Students will be exposed to reading strategies that will assist in vocabulary building and understanding a variety of texts, and will also focus on prewriting techniques, summary writing and structural components of note-taking. The students will increase college and career awareness through guest speaker presentations, field trip opportunities, and research.

Our AVID Mission: Our mission for this year in AVID is to become educated and responsible young adults, to accomplish every assignment to the best of our ability, and, most importantly, to have fun! THINK COLLEGE!

Field Trip to UCLA
Our field trip to UCLA is coming up. On Saturday, November 12, we will take a trip to UCLA, see the campus, and attend a UCLA football game. We will send home all the information you need soon.

Reminder: Per the AVID student contract, students who received one or more Dís or Fís or Nís or Uís on the quarter report card are currently ineligible to attend the field trip. However, students still have the opportunity to bring their grades up and attend. We will send out a grade check two weeks before the trip. If students have no Dís or Fís/Nís or Uís on that grade check, they will then be allowed to go on the field trip.
Important Info for 10/10-10/14
Here are a few things you need to know for this week.

1. The 1st quarter ended on Friday. Report cards will be sent home next week.

2. I also sent a grade check home with students today; please look for this and make sure to sign it.

3. Students have been doing a good job organizing their binders. Keep up the good work! As the year progresses, students tend to become less organized and run out of supplies more often. We do a binder check every week in AVID, but It would be helpful for you to do periodic checks of your studentís binder. It is also very helpful to make sure your student has all of the supplies he or she needs.
Week of 9/12-9/16

Here's some information for next week:

Grade Checks - Students had their teachers fill out grade checks last week. These grade checks were supposed to be signed by parents and students. If your student did not give the grade check to you to get it signed, please look for it on Monday, and have him or her return it to me on Tuesday.

Binder Check: As always, we will do a binder check on Friday. Please check to make sure your student is organized.

Homework for 9/6-9/9
Grade Check:
This week, students will receive a grade check form on Tuesday. Students and teachers will fill out the form. Parents, please sign the form - it's due on Friday.

Binder Check:
As always, we will have a binder check on Friday. Make sure that your binder is organized and that you have all the necessary supplies.
Homework for 8/29-9/2
We will have a binder check every Friday, so stay organized!
As students transition into middle school, organization is a vital skill. I would suggest that, for the next few weeks, you check your studentís backpack, binder, and agenda every day:

1. Make sure there are no loose papers in the backpack.
2. Make sure all papers are in the binder, in rings, behind the correct divider/class.
3. Make sure the agenda is filled out. This will tell you what your student needs to do for homework.

Get Connected on Class Dojo
You should have received an invite that tells how to connect to Class Dojo. I will use this tool to keep you updated on your studentís behavior and to give you some important information. Please let me know if you have any questions.
